Creator $ vs referral $ (15% creator)

Judgment: if creator dollars beat referral dollars on the same AOV, you are not fighting the platform’s ~6% — you are negotiating your affiliate stack. Fix commission before you obsess over another half-point of referral.

Seller-focused dollar view using US general 6% referral and a fixed 15% creator offer. UK/EU ~9% referral is higher than the US column below on the same AOV — leave more room for creators there, or accept a thinner net.

AOV Referral $ (US 6%) Creator $ (15%) Which is larger?
$15 $0.90 $2.25 Creator (~2.5× referral)
$30 $1.80 $4.50 Creator (~2.5× referral)
$60 $3.60 $9.00 Creator (~2.5× referral)

United States

Standard US referral is 6% on qualified orders from 1 April 2024. Payment processing is generally included in that referral rather than billed as a separate card-style percentage. Selected jewelry sub-categories dropped to 5% from 31 October 2024 (see jewelry).

On refunds, US sellers may incur a refund administration fee of 20% of the referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU from 15 May 2025. Combined with reverse logistics, that is a pricing input — not a rounding error.

FBT figures on this site are planning placeholders from fees-data (see FBT calculator / sources). Paste the live unit fee from the official US FBT rate card before you choose fulfillment. New-seller missions sometimes model around ~3% for about 30 days; do not treat that as a permanent base rate.

US jewelry (5% vs 6%)

Selected US jewelry sub-categories (diamond, gold, jade, platinum/carat gold, ruby/sapphire/emerald-type lists in Academy) are typically 5% referral from 31 October 2024, versus 6% general. That is a 1 percentage point discount — real money on higher AOV, usually smaller than creator commission or shipping.

US category (model)Typical referralOn $30On $80
Most categories6%$1.80$4.80
Selected jewelry5%$1.50$4.00

Accessories mis-categorized as general stay at 6%. UK and EU jewelry usually follow the standard ~9% structure unless a local table says otherwise. Confirm the live listing rate in Seller Center before you price as 5%.

United Kingdom

The standard UK platform commission is 9% VAT-inclusive (all-in framing in UK Seller Academy) for most categories. That 9% is the marketplace cut only — creator/affiliate commission and fulfilment are extra.

Official UK commission policy describes category reductions for specified Electronics and Beauty products (policy examples around 5% effective on eligible SKUs). Our calculator still defaults to 9% so you do not accidentally understate fees; override when Seller Center shows a lower leaf-category rate.

On a £24.99 sale, 9% is £2.25; a 15% creator collab is £3.75 — more than the marketplace fee. Our model does not apply the US-style refund admin (20% of referral, cap $5) to the UK by default. UK FBT/logistics placeholders (~£2.80 single / ~£2.20 multi) are comparison-only; paste live logistics pricing.

European Union (EU5: DE, FR, IT, ES, IE)

For EU5, the standard platform commission is 9% from 8 January 2026 on settled orders (VAT-inclusive framing in policy materials). Listed electronics (and related listed sub-categories) can be 7%. New sellers may see temporary reductions around ~4% for up to 60 days under missions — then plan at the standard rate.

Commission policy is largely harmonised at 9% / 7% / new-seller paths, but VAT handling, return norms, carrier costs, and creator markets still differ between DE, FR, IT, ES, and IE. Do not copy a single “Europe average” postage number into every shop.

The 7% electronics path is category-list driven, not a blanket “tech products” discount. Our model does not apply the US refund-admin cap to EU by default. Logistics placeholders (~€3.20 single / ~€2.50 multi) are planning only.

Which market is “cheapest”?

On paper, US 6% looks better than UK/EU 9%. In reality, landed COGS, shipping, VAT handling, return culture, and average creator rates matter more than a 3-point referral gap. A UK product with low shipping and 10% creator commission can beat a US SKU with heavy FBT and 20% affiliate payouts.

Use the same sell price and cost stack, then toggle Region on the profit calculator — that is the fastest like-for-like contribution-margin check.

Seller checklist when rates change

  • Re-check referral % by category in Seller Center every 1–2 months.
  • Update FBT rate cards when weight bands change — placeholders here are not the live card.
  • Re-run break-even after any creator commission change.
  • Document the date you last verified fees (we display ours on every page).

Do US jewelry sellers pay a lower fee?

Selected jewelry sub-categories are 5% vs 6% general US referral (from 31 Oct 2024). See US jewelry.
