Gross vs net on TikTok Shop
Gross margin ≈ (Price − COGS) / Price. Useful, but incomplete. Net margin here means profit after referral fee, creator commission, fulfillment, ads and expected returns — closer to contribution margin per unit.
Illustrative net margin bands
| Net margin | Signal | Typical action |
|---|---|---|
| < 0% | Losing money per unit | Stop scale; fix price/COGS/commission |
| 0–10% | Fragile | OK only with very high volume + low returns |
| 10–20% | Acceptable | Monitor CPA and return rate closely |
| 20–35% | Healthy for many DTC-style SKUs | Scale creatives & affiliates |
| 35%+ | Strong | Defend with brand / bundles; watch copycats |
These bands are directional, not rules. Low-AOV commodities may live lower; premium branded goods should aim higher.
Levers that move margin fastest
- Creator commission — largest discretionary % for affiliate-heavy shops.
- Sell price — test $1–$3 increases with content quality.
- COGS / landed cost — supplier MOQ and shipping terms.
- Fulfillment mode — FBT vs self-ship unit economics.
- Return rate — sizing guides, accurate media, QC.
