Gross vs net on TikTok Shop

Gross margin ≈ (Price − COGS) / Price. Useful, but incomplete. Net margin here means profit after referral fee, creator commission, fulfillment, ads and expected returns — closer to contribution margin per unit.

Illustrative net margin bands

Net marginSignalTypical action
< 0%Losing money per unitStop scale; fix price/COGS/commission
0–10%FragileOK only with very high volume + low returns
10–20%AcceptableMonitor CPA and return rate closely
20–35%Healthy for many DTC-style SKUsScale creatives & affiliates
35%+StrongDefend with brand / bundles; watch copycats

These bands are directional, not rules. Low-AOV commodities may live lower; premium branded goods should aim higher.

Levers that move margin fastest

  1. Creator commission — largest discretionary % for affiliate-heavy shops.
  2. Sell price — test $1–$3 increases with content quality.
  3. COGS / landed cost — supplier MOQ and shipping terms.
  4. Fulfillment mode — FBT vs self-ship unit economics.
  5. Return rate — sizing guides, accurate media, QC.
